At its Feb. 13 meeting the Fauquier County School Board honored 16 teachers, all of whom have been nominated to be Fauquier County’s representative in the Washington Post Teacher of the Year competition. A selection panel will choose one of the 16 teachers to be the Fauquier County Teacher of the Year, and that teacher will be entered into the Post’s Teacher of the Year competition. The Fauquier County Teacher of the Year will be announced in mid-April. At the school board meeting each school’s Teacher of the Year nominee received an award in the form of a glass apple. The Fauquier Excellence in Education Foundation will also honor the nominees at a reception where each will receive a cash award.
Seventh-grade students Annelise Borst of Auburn Middle School and Mikey Goltry of Warrenton Middle School have been selected to participate in the 2017 American Choral Directions Association’s All-Virginia Middle School Honor Choir. Out of 1,096 submissions, 318 students from across the Commonwealth were selected to participate. Each student had to audio record an audition in three parts: a music scale, “My Country Tis of Thee” and a song of their choice. The All-Virginia Middle School Honor Choir will rehearse April 27-30 culminating in a concert at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Tech campus on April 30.
Fauquier County Public Schools is currently updating its website at www.fcps1.org in order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Essentially the update means content on the site will be more limited. For approximately three months the school division has been making changes to the site in response to an out-of-state complaint filed with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) saying the FCPS site is not compliant with ADA.
