Forty-seven years have come and gone since Diana Ross debuted “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand, make this world a better place if you can” on her first solo album; that was some 35 years before seventh-graders at Warrenton Middle School were even born. Nonetheless, the pre-teens at WMS lived out the song’s theme this past Christmas through two service projects that reached out and touched others nearly 7,000 miles away.
Warrenton Middle School’s National Junior Art Honor Society spent the morning of Dec. 5 teaching Bradley Elementary School’s fifth graders. As part of the NJAHS’s outreach program WMS students went to Bradley Elementary to give a presentation about middle school in general and about its art program. The NJAHS also selected and designed two lessons to teach to the fifth graders with the guidance of Marisa Pappas, WMS art teacher. In preparation for the trip and working in groups of three or four, each of the NJAHS students created a “teacher sample” and a short lesson plan to follow.
It’s time for Fauquier County students to begin thinking about the 2017 Regional Science & Engineering Fairs. Yes, fairs is plural. For the first time, the senior and junior division fairs will be held on different dates. The senior division fair for 9th-12th graders will be held on Saturday, March 11, and the junior division fair for 6th-8th graders will be held on Saturday, April 29.
