ACCELERATED READING PROGRAM
The Accelerated Reader Program is an independent reading management system that combines selected lists of a wide variety of books with computer software. It tests comprehension and records performance. A student selects a book, reads it, and takes a multiple-choice test on the computer. The numbers of questions range from five at the primary level to 10-20 questions for the more advanced books. A passing score of at least 60% is awarded points by the computer based on the length and difficulty of the book as well as the student's level of comprehension.
There are a number of advantages to this program that make it an incentive for students. A major attraction for the students is the computer use. The point system provides a consistent assessment of performance and gives the student immediate feedback. Questions answered incorrectly are reviewed and corrected after the test. The use of selected books for the program also provides a measure of quality control. The computer provides easy record keeping for individual students, each class, and the entire school.
