SOL (Standards of Learning)

The following website will offer information, practice tests and additional resources for all SOL tests -   http://www.doe.virginia.gov

SAT

Usually taken in the spring of junior year & in the fall of senior year
You may register for the SAT Reasoning Test or the Subject Tests either online at http://www.collegeboard.com or by mail with an "SAT Registration Bulletin" found in guidance. Early registration will improve your chances of receiving your first choice location testing location. (Use test center code 47-735 for Fauquier High School.)

It is recommended that current juniors take the SAT at least once before the summer. To ensure that you will be able to present your best scores on college applications, the SAT should be taken no later than December of the senior year for application to four-year colleges and universities.

 ACT

Usually taken in the winter/spring of junior year & in fall of senior year.
You may register for the ACT either online at http://www.actstudent.org or by mail. Early registration will improve your chances of receiving your first choice location (Liberty HS serves as a testing location).

Students that have scored lower than expected on the SAT should consider taking the ACT. The ACT is now accepted by all four-year colleges in the country. The majority of schools accept both tests and will typically take the best score between the two. Be sure to check with each school to which you are applying.

The ACT has recently added an optional 30-minute Writing test to compliment the change on the SAT.

PSAT/ NMSQT

Taken by all 10th & self-selected 11th graders each school year .
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation ( http://www.nationalmerit.org / ). Only juniors will have their scores considered for the National Merit program.

The test takes place annually in October. All sophomores will have their test scored automatically (cost covered by FCPS) and juniors can pay a small fee have their test scored

ASVAB

Taken by 11th & 12th graders .
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ( http://www.asvabprogram.com / ), the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world, tests students on eight different areas and provides individualized career exploration information (including, but not limited to, careers in the armed forces).

The ASVAB is offered at FHS in October and March each school year. Students will typically receive their scores within two - three weeks of the testing date.  A representative from the ASVAB program will return to the school to interpret the scores with the students.

TOEFL

Usually taken at the end of the junior year or beginning of senior year.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ) should be taken by those students whose first language is not English AND those students that might score lower on SAT/ACT sections as a result. Each college has varying requirements and students should contact each school individually.

For more information or to register for a test, go to the TOEFL web site (www.toefl.org) or call 1-800-GO-TOEFL (1-800-468-6335).
