FCPS POLICY REVISION AFFECTS STUDENTS WHO ATTEND SCHOOL OUT-OF-ZONE BASED ON CHILD CARE WAIVER

A recently approved revision to a Fauquier County School Board policy will impact students who currently attend an out-of-zone school on the basis of a child care waiver. Previously, the policy allowed child care waivers for students from kindergarten through grade eight. The revised policy allows child care waivers only through grade six.

Parents who submit a request for a child care waiver for a rising sixth grader in school year 2012-2013 should be aware that this option will not be available in subsequent years. Those students will be required to return to their zoned school beginning in the seventh grade.

Students who are currently in the sixth or seventh grade may be grandfathered under the previous policy. The child care waiver will be considered for these rising seventh- and eighth-grade students through the eighth grade. However, the request for a child care waiver must be submitted each year, and approval is subject to factors such as school enrollment. These students will be required to attend their zoned school in ninth grade.
