FCPS Elementary School Counselor Mission Statement The Fauquier County Elementary School Counseling Program is dedicated to creating a safe, caring, and respectful environment in which students can strive toward academic, personal, social, and career success. As professional school counselors we serve as advocates for the students and collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators, and the community. Mrs. Shaffer works with students, parents, and staff at C. Hunter Ritchie Elementary in a variety of ways in an effort to improve and enhance learning. The three main ways Mrs. Shaffer works with students is through classroom guidance, individual counseling, and group counseling.
What is Individual Counseling? Individual counseling provides students with the opportunity to discuss a particular concern (friendship, peer conflict, feelings, and academic struggles) and work towards positive solutions. Individual counseling is voluntary. Students can sign-up for individual counseling by completing a counselor form. Parents, teachers, and administrators can also refer a student for individual counseling. Parents are always notified if a child requests or warrants ongoing counseling.
Small group counseling is available to students with parent permission. Group counseling provides students, with similar interests or concerns, the opportunity to discuss their feelings in a safe environment. Groups are also designed to help students develop healthy coping strategies. Various group topics will be offered through out the school year, i.e.: Divorce Support Group, Get Rid of Worries Group, Families in Different Packages Group, and Positive Peer Relationship Group. |
