Fauquier County Public Schools will transition to a new parent and staff notification system in November. Known as “Mass Notify,” the new messaging and alert system is the second component in the Blackboard Community Engagement solution, which includes five areas: web community (website), Mass Notify (alerts and messaging), social media manager, mobile communications (mobile app) and teacher communications (link to Blackboard Learn). The website component became operational at www.fcps1.org just over a year ago, and the other three components will be implemented by the end of this school year.

  • Pearson Elementary School Hosts 'Literacy Diner'

A team from the University of Virginia’s “Project Kaleidoscope” headlined a “Literacy Diner” at Pearson Elementary School on Oct. 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Guests enjoyed a variety of healthy snacks and conversation with other families while they waited for the presentation to begin. Three presenters worked with parents and students on the topic “Five Ways to Empower and Engage Children in Reading Away from School.” The strategies shared included the many ways to read, making the love of reading visible, using child choice, talking about reading, and celebrating success. Parents and children were given opportunities to practice the strategies and receive feedback from the presenters. First, the presenters had the children use pictures and/or words to write down topics about which they would be interested in reading. Then later in the evening the children selected a book to read with their parents and practiced talking about what they had read.
