Hiring Process

  • Hiring Process Overview

Fauquier County and Fauquier Public School Divisions’ application/selection process includes the following steps. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and the steps are subject to change.

    Step One: Job Announcement

New job announcements are posted on the county's Current Job Openings page, which is updated when positions become available. Internal or external job announcements are required to be advertised for a minimum of 5 calendar days. Check each announcement for the closing date. Resumes must be submitted prior to midnight on the closing date.

    •  You can subscribe to receive notices about new jobs by email

Step 2:  Applying for the Job Announcement

Resumes will only be accepted online with your application when applying. When applying for the position, you may wish to gather all your work history so you can complete the process.

On the first visit to Fauquier ePortal, applicants create an account with a User ID and PIN. When applying for the first time, you will go to: eportal.fauquiercounty.gov and click on "Create New Account"

    Did You Know...
    • You will receive an email stating your application has been received

    • You are able to view the status of jobs you've applied for by checking your account.

    Step 3: Review Processs

After the job announcement has closed, applications and resumes are reviewed either by analysts in the Department of Human Resources or by the hiring department. These are reviewed against the job's qualifications and requirements—based on the information in the job announcement—to find the applicants that are the closest match.

To remain in consideration for the job, applicants must clearly demonstrate that they meet...

    • all the Minimum Qualifications
    • all the Special Requirements
    • many of the Preferred Qualifications

    Did You Know...
    •  The status for the job will be UNDER REVIEW during this phase. To see the status of your application you must log back into your application account.
    •  In many cases, work experience may substitute for the education specified in the Minimum Qualifications. Likewise, education may substitute for work experience.

    •  Applications and resumes are read by people, not selected through computer rankings. Attempts to 'beat the system' by loading your resume with keywords instead of sentences simply produces an unreadable resume.

Step 4: Application Reviewed by Department

Applications are then sent to the hiring department.

    Did You Know...
    •  The status for the job will be either FORWARDED or NOT FORWARDED during this phase.
    •  Even if you meet the qualifications, you may not be FORWARDED because of the number and competitiveness of resumes received. It's normal for applicant pools to include many well-qualified applicants, and only the top-rated will advance in the process.

Step 5: Interview for Qualified Applicants

The hiring department decides which applicants from the Forwarded List will be interviewed. Not every applicant will be interviewed; however, no less than 'half plus one' of the Certification List applicants will be interviewed. For example, if the List includes ten people, six (or more) will be interviewed. Interviews are usually conducted by a panel of three or more people.

Some interview processes also include a job-related exercise, written test, oral exam, performance test and/or assessment center.

    Step 6: Offer of Employment

An offer of employment is made to the applicant who was determined to be the best match for the position.

All interviewed applicants who did not get a job offer are notified—usually by letter—of the final outcome of the selection process.

    Did You Know...
    •  You can continue to check MY STATUS to monitor whether a job has been filled. Once the position is filled you will no longer be able to see the position.

    Step 7: Background Check

Prior to starting work, a background and reference check will be conducted on all potential hires. Some positions, however, will require additional background checks to include:

    • criminal background record (initiated by fingerprinting)
    • driving record
    • credit history (for financial positions)
    • education
    • professional licenses

    Pre-employment Medical Examination

If indicated in the job announcement, an applicant must satisfactorily meet required medical standards for the job in a medical examination conducted by county-designated medical staff.

NOTE: Due to the volume of applications received, we will only contact those applicants who have been selected for employment.  Applicants may confirm the receipt of their application by visiting the application site.  Once you apply, you will receive an email acknowledging the receipt of your application and a PIN number to access your application.  Select the applicant profile  from the menu on the left side of the screen.
