FCPS 1 Elementary English Language Arts

  • The goal of literacy instruction in Fauquier County Public Schools is to ensure that all children have the necessary skills to become successful readers, writers, speakers, and listeners with the critical thinking skills that are required to be successful as they progress and transition through the stages of their lives.


    Effective K-5 Reading Instruction must include explicit, systematic, core classroom instruction, including the Five Pillars of Literacy Instruction identified in 2000 by the National Reading Panel:

    • Phonemic Awareness 
    • Phonics
    • Fluency
    • Vocabulary
    • Comprehension

    Benchmark Literacy - comprehensive, research-proven program that builds foundational skills while scaffolding learning through complex informational and literary texts

    RAZ-Plus - K-5 standards-aligned, supplemental literacy program that includes leveled books, foundational skills, ELL activities, digital activities to reinforce learning, assessments, and independent reading for students

    Waterford Reading Academy (K-2) - instructional software guiding students along an adaptive, personalized pathway through foundational skill development 

    Imagine Language and Literacy (3-5) - instructional software designed to accelerate learning in all four domains of literacy (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) through personalized learning paths that adapt based on performance
