Quarantine Information for Students and Families

  • If your child is determined to be a close contact of a positive case, per the FCPS COVID-19 Mitigation Plan, your child will need to quarantine.  While quarantining, your child should remain at home (this includes extracurricular activities - sports, church, music lessons, etc.) and be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms of infection include fever (although not always reported), cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, weakness/fatigue, muscle aches, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, lack of appetite, headaches, and the loss of taste and smell.  Close contacts who develop any of the symptoms above should be tested for COVID-19 and isolate appropriately while awaiting results.

Please remember to follow the VDH/CDC guidelines on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within our community.  Get vaccinated when eligible and please remember to wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands frequently, and stay at home when you are sick.  For additional information on COVID-19, please visit www.vdh.virginia/coronavirus

    Length of Quarantine

If a student does not have symptoms, quarantine may end after ten days or immediately upon receiving a negative result from a PCR or Antigen (rapid) test administered on day five or later from the date of exposure. The school will require written documentation of the negative test (name, date, facility) in order for the student to return prior to ten days.

Please note:  At-home rapid tests are not accepted to shorten quarantine. Tests must be performed by medical providers.

    Instruction During Quarantine

Instructional Guidelines for ELEMENTARY Students in Quarantine:

    • Quarantine students will have the opportunity to meet with a teacher for live instructional interaction for a minimum of 15-30 minutes twice a week, focusing on the four core areas for the duration of the quarantine period.
    • Library, art, music and PE will still be handled asynchronously.
    • The time and dates may vary from classroom to classroom, grade level to grade level, school to school and may be handled before school, during school or after school.
    • The scheduled check-in time of twice a week is non-negotiable.
    • Teachers will also be available during office hours at times determined by the teacher and school administration.
    • Students can also complete asynchronous work that may include any of the following (but not all are required): work packets parents can pick up from the school, activities posted on Google Classroom, viewing of recordings from class posted on Google Classroom as an additional support.

Instructional Guidelines for MIDDLE School Students in Quarantine:

    • For grades 6, 7, and 8, quarantine students will have the opportunity to meet with a teacher for live instruction for one period, weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for the duration of the quarantine period.
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays will be language arts and math.
    • Wednesday will be social studies and science.
    • PE and electives will be asynchronous.
    • Teachers will also be available during office hours at times determined by the teacher and school administration.

Instructional Guidelines for HIGH School Students in Quarantine:

    • The diversity and complexity of the high school master schedules make the camera the most viable option to create some synchronous learning for quarantined students.
    • High school teachers will make links available for students to join each class for the first 15-40 minutes of each class.
    • The primary goal is for quarantine students to see and hear directions and content that will support their independent learning.
    • Teachers will also be available during office hours at times determined by the teacher and school administration.
