  • Smith Elementary Holds Halloween STEAM-Fest

Smith Elementary School held a Halloween STEAM-Fest where students and adults, many in costume, participated in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) activities. In one “fun and yummy” activity coordinated by gifted/talented teacher Emily Fenner, a group of “math buddies” – fifth graders paired with second graders – made candy corn catapults, designing and building the devices and then testing their range. In Gail Angelos’ second-grade class, students, assisted by parent volunteers, made slime and elephant toothpaste by combining simple ingredients; of course, students donned trash bag lab coats and goggles for safety.

Fauquier County Public Schools will transition to a new parent and staff notification system in November. Known as “Mass Notify,” the new messaging and alert system is the second component in the Blackboard Community Engagement solution, which includes five areas: web community (website), Mass Notify (alerts and messaging), social media manager, mobile communications (mobile app) and teacher communications (link to Blackboard Learn). The website component became operational at www.fcps1.org just over a year ago, and the other three components will be implemented by the end of this school year.
