Non-Resident Tuition
Methodology for Calculating Tuition for Non-Resident Students
Policy Reference: 7-2.3
Tuition for non-resident students is set to reflect the total per capita cost of education, excluding capital outlay and debt service.
- If tuition is paid by the school division of the student’s residence through a formal contract between the two School Boards, the rate is set by the terms of that agreement.
- Tuition must be paid in advance. Continued access to School Division programs and activities is contingent upon full payment of all fees and charges.
Tuition Rates by School Year
| School Year | Annual Tuition | Daily Rate (based on 180 days) |
|---|---|---|
| 2025–2026 | $11,101 | $61.67 |
| 2024–2025 | $10,877 | $60.43 |
| 2023–2024 | $10,015 | $55.64 |
| 2022–2023 | $9,953 | $55.28 |
| 2021–2022 | $10,073 | $55.95 |
| 2020–2021 | $9,330 | $51.82 |
Methodology
The tuition calculation ensures that educational costs for non-resident students—normally covered by county taxpayers—are instead paid by the student’s family.
Calculation Formula:
Total Local Support (Direct + Indirect - Debt Service) ÷ Projected Enrollment
FY 2026 Details:
- Total Local Support: $117,771,894
- Direct Support (Local Transfer): $106,050,967
- Indirect Support (Consolidated Departments): $11,720,927
- Projected Enrollment: 10,609 students
- Calculated Tuition: $117,771,894 ÷ 10,609 = $11,101 (rounded)
- Daily Rate: $11,101 ÷ 180 days = $61.67 (rounded)
Tuition for Students Moving Into the County
If a family has a signed home contract in Fauquier County and requests early enrollment for their child:
- A copy of the home purchase contract is required.
- Tuition is charged through the settlement date.
This ensures the family covers the cost of education until they become Fauquier County taxpayers.
