Non-Resident Tuition

Methodology for Calculating Tuition for Non-Resident Students

Policy 7-2.3

Tuition charged under Policy 7-2.3 is equivalent to the total per capita cost of education, excluding capital outlay and debt service.

If tuition is payable by the school board of the student's resident school division under a contract between the two school boards, the tuition amount will be the rate established in that agreement.

Tuition must be paid in advance. Continued participation in Fauquier County Public Schools programs and activities is contingent upon payment of all applicable tuition and fees.

Tuition Rates

School Year Annual Tuition Daily Rate (180 Days)
2026-2027 $11,397 $63.32
2025-2026 $11,101 $61.67
2024-2025 $10,877 $60.43
2023-2024 $10,015 $55.64
2022-2023 $9,953 $55.28
2021-2022 $10,073 $55.95

Tuition Calculation Methodology

The tuition calculation is designed to ensure that non-resident students contribute toward educational costs that are otherwise supported by Fauquier County taxpayers.

The annual tuition rate is calculated by dividing the total local direct and indirect support for education, excluding debt service, by the projected student enrollment.

FY 2027 Calculation

Total local direct and indirect support: $119,669,739

  • Local direct support: $107,650,967
  • Local indirect support (allocation of consolidated departments): $12,018,772

Projected enrollment: 10,500 students

Tuition Formula

Annual tuition

$119,669,739 ÷ 10,500 = $11,397 (rounded)

Daily tuition rate

$11,397 ÷ 180 instructional days = $63.32 (rounded)

Tuition for Students Moving to Fauquier County

Families who have a signed contract to purchase a home in Fauquier County may enroll their child before settlement.

To qualify, the family must provide a copy of the signed home purchase contract. Tuition will be charged through the settlement date. Once the home purchase is finalized, the family becomes Fauquier County taxpayers, and tuition charges will no longer apply.
