Strategic Plan

Strategic planning is intended to accomplish three key tasks: (1) clarifying the outcomes we wish to achieve; (2) selecting the broad strategies that will enable us to reach those outcomes; and (3) identifying ways to measure progress. With these objectives in mind, Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS1) has built its Strategic Plan around six essential strategies: Academics, Student Support, Environments, Staff, Communication, and Resources. These pillars provide a structured yet flexible framework for guiding public education services across the division.

Background on Aspirations 2.2

In 2010, the FCPS1 School Board launched the development of a Strategic Plan to enhance these six focus areas. This current plan, known as "Aspirations 2.2," includes core beliefs, a mission, specific objectives, and targeted strategies. Each year, the Strategic Plan is reviewed within the annual budget to ensure alignment with FCPS1’s evolving goals and community needs.

The current FCPS1 Strategic Plan (Aspirations 2.2) was last formally adopted by the School Board on February 3, 2020. The plan is available for review here: Strategic Plan Document. A comprehensive review began at the FCPS1 School Board Summit on November 29, 2023, where updates and modernization were discussed to keep the plan responsive to current educational needs.

Current Process for Updating the Strategic Plan

Following the guidance from the November 2023 School Board Summit, FCPS1 is actively working to make Aspirations 2.2 a "living" strategic plan that adapts to evolving challenges. Key milestones from the Summit include:

  • Initiating discussions on the strategic plan’s future direction.
  • Forming a steering committee, conducting assessments, and identifying gaps.
  • Shifting toward a dynamic framework that is inclusive and applicable at all levels of the organization.

The updated Strategic Plan will evolve from 134 specific tasks to a broader, more agile framework. This transition aims to focus on three core areas essential to the mission of FCPS1, making the plan more accessible, memorable, and actionable across the division.
