Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

Under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), citizens of Virginia and media representatives have the right to access public records held by public bodies, including Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS1). FOIA promotes transparency and accountability in government by ensuring that public records are open to inspection or copying unless a specific legal exemption applies. FCPS1 is committed to responding to FOIA requests promptly, typically within five working days, and may charge reasonable fees to cover the costs of providing the requested records. Media Inquiries and Requests

Media Inquiries, Visits, and Interviews:

All media inquiries, including requests to film, photograph, or interview FCPS1 staff members and students should be directed to the FCPS1 Department of Communications. Here’s how we manage media requests:

Submit Requests: Contact the FCPS1 Department of Communications by phone or email to submit your request. Early contact is encouraged to ensure a timely response.
Visiting Schools: Media representatives who wish to visit any FCPS1 property must receive prior approval from the Department of Communications. Media visits require coordination to minimize disruptions, and a Communications staff member will accompany media on school property.
Interviewing School Officials: If you are interested in interviewing, filming, or photographing an FCPS1 employee, the Department of Communications will assist in finding the appropriate resource and arranging interview times if deemed appropriate.
Photographing or Interviewing Students: To protect student privacy, all requests to photograph or interview students must be approved by the Department of Communications. Necessary permissions will be coordinated with parents and school officials.

Important Guidelines:

School Property Access: Media members are not allowed on FCPS1 property without prior approval. Unauthorized visits or filming are not permitted, and media must remain on public sidewalks or the state right-of-way unless granted specific permission.
Emergency Situations: During emergencies, all media inquiries will be managed by the Department of Communications to allow crisis response teams to focus on relief efforts. Information will be provided as quickly and accurately as possible, but access to affected areas may be restricted.
Photo and Video Credits: FCPS1 retains the rights to all photographs and videos it produces. Any use of FCPS1-produced media requires permission from the Department of Communications, and proper credit must be given:

School Board and Open Meetings:

Media are welcome to attend all open meetings of the Fauquier County School Board. However, to avoid disruptions, interviews should be conducted outside meeting rooms in designated areas.
