Matthew Yonkey

Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS1) named Matthew Yonkey the division’s next assistant superintendent of administration at the School Board’s Sept. 22 work session. Yonkey will begin his new role Nov. 3, 2025, following the retirement of David Graham, who will conclude his 35-year career with the division on Nov. 1.

Yonkey brings more than 20 years of teaching and administrative experience. He has served as principal of Auburn Middle School since August 2022 and previously led Brumfield Elementary School as assistant principal and principal. Before moving into administration, he directed bands at Kettle Run High School and taught music in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties.

“Mr. Yonkey brings experience in school administration, strong leadership, and a proven commitment to students and staff,” Superintendent Major Warner said. “We are confident he will lead our administrative teams with the same dedication and integrity he has demonstrated throughout his career.”

Yonkey said his priorities in the new role will remain consistent. “My focus will remain on ensuring safety, fostering engagement, and strengthening learning opportunities,” he said. “I am excited to continue serving Fauquier County Public Schools and to make a positive and lasting impact for our students, staff, and community.”

Yonkey holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Shenandoah University and a master’s degree in school administration from Regent University. He lives in Culpeper with his wife, their sons, Miles and Cole, and two dogs.

The posting for the Auburn Middle School principal position will be released immediately to ensure a smooth transition in school leadership.
