Preparing for Inclement Weather

As we enter the winter weather season, it’s crucial to be ready for potential inclement weather. Ensuring the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority when making decisions about school closings or delays. Below, we’ve provided answers to frequently asked questions about our weather-related procedures.

How does FCPS decide on weather-related closings or delays?

The decision-making process involves:

  • Monitoring weather conditions and forecasts.
  • Reviewing road conditions in collaboration with local law enforcement.
  • Assessing specific areas of the county prone to icing or slow melting.
  • The Division Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Administration evaluate all gathered information before making a decision.

How will FCPS notify you about school closures or delays?

FCPS communicates decisions through multiple channels:

  • Direct Messages: Phone calls, text messages, and emails to staff and families (available in English and Spanish, and other languages through our website).
  • Social Media:
    • Facebook: @FCPS1Official
    • Twitter: @FCPS1News (news and alerts), @FCPS1Alerts (alerts only)
    • Instagram: @FCPS1news
  • Website: www.fcps1.org
  • Mobile App: FCPS mobile app
  • Local Media Outlets

What are the possible closure/delay options?

  • School Closure: Families and staff receive calls, emails, and text messages with details, including reporting times for 12-month employees and essential personnel.
  • 2-Hour Delay: This allows additional time to clear snow or ice at schools and provides bus drivers daylight to navigate hazardous conditions.
  • Early Dismissal: We aim to avoid unexpected closures that leave students home alone. Decisions for mid-morning or afternoon weather systems rely on the most accurate forecasts available.
  • Activity Cancellations:
    • A storm watch does not automatically cancel after-school, evening, or weekend activities.
    • A storm warning will lead to cancellations.

When are decisions made?

  • When possible, decisions are made the night before.
  • If conditions require a delay, we aim to notify families by 5:30 a.m.

We hope these answers clarify our procedures for weather-related closings and delays. Stay safe and warm this winter!
