MVGS Students Shine at Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair

Students from Mountain Vista Governor’s School (MVGS) showed their talents at the Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair (VPRSF) on March 20 in Charlottesville. Representing Fauquier County’s Kettle Run, Liberty, and Fauquier High Schools, MVGS students earned top awards and secured spots at future science events.

Mia Heller, a junior at Kettle Run High School, took home the Grand Prize for her project, Micro-Magnetism: Using an Oil-Based Ferrofluid to Remove Microplastics from Drinking Water. She won an all-expenses-paid trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May. Heller also won 1st place in Chemistry with the North Forks Innovator Award and earned a spot at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair on April 5.

Becca Fowler, a junior at Liberty High School, placed runner-up for the Grand Prize with her project, Optimizing Biochar in Cement for Durability. Fowler also won 1st place in Engineering: Materials & Bioengineering and was invited to the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair in April.

Sam Lloyd, IV, a senior at Kettle Run High School, earned 1st place in Animal Sciences with his project, How Ambient Light Affects White-Tailed Deer Habits. Lloyd was also invited to Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair in April.

Jack Dueck, a senior at Fauquier High School, earned 3rd place in Chemistry for his project, Breaking Down Sugar: Testing the Strength of Different Sugar Compounds.

MVGS students continue to excel, and their success at VPRSF highlights their hard work and creativity. We are excited to see what they achieve next at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair.

Congratulations to our students and good luck at the next competition!
