Taylor Middle Renovation
Taylor Middle School Expansion & Renovation
Status: IN PROGRESS
Project Start Date: May 2025
Project Overview
On Friday, May 30, Taylor Middle School marked a significant milestone with a community groundbreaking ceremony. Many alumni, families, and community members joined the School Board and FCPS1 leadership to celebrate the start of this transformative project.
The Taylor Middle School modernization project includes:
-
A new two-story addition totaling approximately 47,435 square feet,
-
A new three-story classroom addition adding 20,796 square feet,
-
Renovations to approximately 80,794 square feet of the existing school building, and
-
A redesigned bus loop and expanded parking areas to improve traffic flow and accessibility.
Upon completion in Fall 2028, the updated facility will serve approximately 850 students, offering a modern and engaging learning environment while preserving the legacy of the original structure.
Originally constructed in 1952, Taylor Middle School holds a unique place in our community’s history. It served as the county’s only school for Black students until public school integration in 1969. This historical significance played a central role in the decision to renovate rather than replace the school—ensuring that future generations continue to learn in a space that honors the past while embracing the future.
