Student Discipline

One of the most important responsibilities of our school division is to provide each student with the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe and secure school environment.  We believe that students, parents and school staff must work cooperatively to ensure that a respectful climate exists at school, where educational and extracurricular programs thrive.

The Code of Student Conduct outlines expectations for student behavior at school and the range of consequences that may be imposed if those expectations are not met.  The Code of Student Conduct applies to students while on school property, while at a school sponsored activity, while under the supervision of school authority (including going to or coming from school), and, in certain circumstances while off school grounds and after school hours.

Discipline HearingsĀ

  • A Superintendent's level hearing will be conducted upon a parent's appeal of a long-term suspension.
  • A Superintendent's level hearing will be conducted when a student is recommended for expulsion.
  • A School Board hearing will be conducted:
    • Upon appeal of a Superintendent's determination to uphold a long-term suspension.
    • Upon the Superintendent's recommendation for expulsion.  (Only the School Board has the authority to expel a student.)

Appeals of Discipline Consequences

  • Appeals of in-school discipline consequences may be appealed to the principal, whose decision is final.
  • Appeals of out-of-school suspension may first be appealed to the building principal, then to the Assistant Superintendent of Student & Special Education Services, whose decision is final.
  • Appeals of long-term suspension may be appealed to Assistant Superintendent of Student & Special Education Services, then to the School Board, whose decision is final.
  • Appeals of expulsion (only the School Board has the authority to expel a student) may be appealed to the Circuit Court, whose decision is final.
