Weather Closings and Delays

In response to severe weather or other emergency situations, Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS1) may need to close schools, delay openings, or dismiss students early.

How Decisions Are Made
Fauquier County spans 60 miles from north to south, and weather conditions can vary widely across the area. One location may have ice or snow, while another area is relatively clear. Because of this, decisions regarding school closings, delayed openings, or early dismissals are based on safety across the entire county.

When making these decisions, student and staff safety is our top priority. We carefully review road conditions reported by our Transportation team, monitor forecasts from the National Weather Service, consult with the Sheriff’s Office and VDOT, and consider the safety of student drivers. Our goal is to make the best possible decision for everyone in the county.

Whenever possible, we make these decisions early to give families time to plan. Please note that no announcements will be made when schools are operating on a normal schedule.
