FCPS Kicks Off School Year with New Learning Management System

August 8, 2022

When Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS) opens its doors to the new school year on August 10, a new learning management system (LMS) will be in place, Schoology. Schoology replaces Blackboard, which had been the school division’s LMS for nearly fifteen years.

FCPS Educational Technology Leader Tina Ference describes Schoology as the “best fit” for the school division.

“We made a change to a new learning management system to meet the needs of all members of our community,” Ference said.  “We are excited that our teachers, staff, students and families can utilize this new platform to enhance their learning experience.”

After reviewing the effectiveness of its existing learning management system, FCPS began to explore new platforms. Parents, students, teachers and administrators participated in an evaluation process throughout the 2021-2022 school year. After thorough research and review, Schoology emerged as the favorite over other platforms, including Canvas and Infinite Campus.

Schoology is designed for all students—from kindergarten through 12th grade—to fully engage with their learning. Schoology was found to best meet the needs of all stakeholders because of its ease of use for parents, students, and staff. It also provides an online help system for all users.

Teacher training began in March and will continue into the 2022-2023 school year. Teachers can access tutorials, including self-paced courses within Schoology, in-person training with instructional technology resource teachers (ITRTs), webinars and YouTube channel options.

FCPS will provide student and parent training in the use of Schoology beginning this week. Parents may take self-paced courses or opt for in-person options with ITRTs and school staff. Families who attended the FCPS Back to School Fairs in July had an opportunity to get an early look at the new platform.
