AMS Blended Information

Greetings Wildcat families!  We realize that there has been a lot of information disseminated over the past several weeks regarding the upcoming transition to the hybrid-learning model starting on November 9.  As a result, we thought it would be helpful to highlight, and summarize, some of that same information along with additional information that will be relevant to the upcoming transition (see information below).

Safety, Health, and Wellness 

  • Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS) requires all staff members, visitors, and students to wear cloth or disposable face masks at all times, except while eating or drinking. This includes any FCPS workplace, school buildings, school activities, and entering, exiting, and riding the school bus.
  • All students and staff will maintain social distancing to the extent possible.  The goal is to maintain a minimum of six feet or more of social distance.
  • FCPS does not permit wearing gaiters, scarves or bandannas in place of cloth or disposable masks.
  • FCPS will allow the wearing of face shields by staff/students only with documented breathing difficulties or students with behavioral difficulties (ex. students with sensory issues who are identified on the autism spectrum.)  The principal has the authority to approve the option to wear a face shield based on the criteria described above.
  • FCPS will review the protocol for face coverings at regular intervals and may choose to modify the current requirements based on new credible guidance on COVID-19 health mitigation strategies.
  • Any exceptions to wearing of face masks must be approved by the principal and meet established FCPS health mitigation requirements.
  • An intervention flowchart will be in place for any student who does not comply with expectations stated above.

Building Health

  • Hand sanitizer dispensers in each classroom and other rooms in building
  • Battery powered Hand sanitizers on mobile stands for large gathering areas
  • Disinfecting wipes in each classroom for high touch surfaces, used between classes
  • Large yellow 6 ft. social distancing sticker on floor at each main entry points to building
  • Plastic sneeze guards installed [café lines (2), main office, guidance, library]
  • Cold Plasma Ionization system installed on all HVAC units
  • Close drinking fountains – Except the touchless bottle filler in 8th grade pod
  • Postage of reminder Signage from CDC, VDH and FCPS
  • Special cleaning protocol by custodial staff
  • Close rooms not being used
  • Electrostatic foggers to spray disinfectants in large spaces
  • Small yellow 6 ft. social distance stickers (library, cafeteria, etc.)
  • Occupied/Vacant signs on all student and staff bathrooms

School Clinic

  • Parents are asked to monitor their children daily for signs of illness and keep them home if they are sick. Attached is the FCPS “Student Symptom Checker” to provide guidance.  Please notify the school nurse if your child is absent due to illness.
  • It is also important for your child to stay home if they have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days. Consult your doctor and notify the school nurse of possible exposure. 
  • The clinic will be have separate areas for sick and well students. If a student has a fever 100 F or higher OR if the child develops symptoms that are new or different for that student, then the student will be moved to a separate clinic area to avoid spread of illness.  Parents will be asked to pick up a sick student within 30 minutes. 
  • Remind your student of basic but vital health behaviors including handwashing before and after eating, sneezing, coughing, and mask adjustment; proper wearing of masks over mouth and nose; and avoidance of touching eyes/nose/mouth.
  • The school nurse will be following the guidance of VA Department of Health Guidelines for Evaluating a Child with COVID-19 Symptoms or Exposure with regard to assessment, dismissal, and return of student to school. Instruction

  • Students will receive two days of in-school direct instruction with a teacher and two days of asynchronous remote learning.
  • Students who have opted to attend school in person have been assigned to either AA days (Mondays/Tuesdays) or BB days (Thursdays/Fridays) based on student last name (AA=last names A-K and BB=last names L-Z). A few exceptions have been made to this breakdown due to transportation related issues.
  • Students will receive new instruction and content on Mondays/Tuesdays (Group A) and Thursdays/Fridays (Group B). You should have already received your group assignment via email from FCPS. If you did not, please contact our Registrar, Ashley Stukey at 540.422.7415.
  • Teachers will offer office hours and will be available to support students on Wednesdays. Teachers will also use the day for curriculum planning and professional learning.  Students will engage in remote learning on Wednesdays, and additional cleaning will be taking place throughout the school building.
  • Live stream (synchronous classes) will not be recorded due to privacy concerns. However, just like any absence from school, students should make sure that they communicate with their teachers and to the school about the absence and get makeup assignments and the work that they have missed.
  • Instructional delivery starting on November 9th will be very similar to the virtual model, which has been in place since the beginning of the school year.  This will allow our educators to best meet the needs of both our in-person and virtual students, who will be taught simultaneously. As a result, we are encouraging students attending classes in person, to bring their school-issued or personal device, with them to school when at all possible.  Students without access to a device will be able to participate/engage/interact in classroom lessons since teachers will be projecting classroom lessons.  In some instances, teachers will also be utilizing hard copies for if/when students do not have access to a device. Teachers may still require all students to submit work electronically.
  • Teachers will communicate supply lists to students/parents prior to November 9th.   

 Physical Education

  • All students will attend physical education class each day they are at school.
  • The locker rooms will not be available for students to change clothes. Please wear an outfit to school that allows you to participate in class. You can change into athletic shoes for class.
  • We are asking students to bring a towel or yoga mat to sit / exercise on during class.
  • Each student will be assigned a 10 x 10 space in the gym where they can keep their things and exercise / perform activities during the period.
  • Masks must be worn at all times during PE both inside and outside.
  • Be prepared to go outside if the weather permits. (Above 45 degrees)
  • Virtual students are expected to fully participate in all activities with their cameras on.
  • All students will be provides asynchronous activities for days they are not in class.

Bell Schedule

  • The bell schedule we will be following beginning on November 9th is attached to this email.
  • For 6th and 8th grade students, their HR/Advisory teacher and classroom is the same as their 1st For 7th grade students, it is the same as their 2nd period with a few exceptions.  Students and parents can verify HR/Advisory teacher and classroom by logging into Infinite Campus.
  • Virtual students do not need to log into HR/Advisory unless prearranged by their teacher.
  • The school day for both face-to-face and virtual students will begin at 7:30 AM and end at 2:28 PM.
  • Students (face-to-face and virtual) will be attending all seven of their classes on each day of synchronous learning.

 

Daily Operations/Logistics

  • Students will be able to enter the building no earlier than 7:00 AM.
  • Any student entering the building between 7:00 AM and 7:15 AM will report to the glass/music hallways where they will be required to stand/sit in pre-marked, socially distanced areas.
  • Students will report to their HR/Advisory classrooms at 7:15 AM.
  • Breakfast will be available between 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM. Any student who wishes to eat breakfast in the morning will be required to pick up their food on their way to their HR/Advisory class.  Once students report to their HR/Advisory classes, they will not be permitted to leave for getting breakfast.
  • During each lunch, shift students will be assigned socially distanced seats. Movement and interaction between students will be limited during all lunch shifts.
  • Students will not have access to student lockers. As a result, they will be permitted to use book bags to carry their personal belongings from class to class.
  • All classroom desks/furniture have been arranged in a manner to keep students socially distanced.
  • Students will be travelling between classes moving in same direction (to the right).
  • Hallway floors will be marked with social distance reminders and foot traffic flow direction.
  • Student restrooms will be used but by only one student at a time. Signage indicating whether the restroom is in use will be installed on the outside of each student restroom door.

School Nutrition

  • All hybrid students may eat free of charge.
  • All meals will be pre-packaged.
  • Touchless & cashless meal service will be instituted.
  • No “a la carte” or water sales will be available. Students will be able to access the building’s water bottle filler station located on second floor in 8th grade pod to refill their personal water containers.  All other water fountains will be shut off.  Any student who does not possess a personal water bottle will be directed to the school’s main office where they will be able to access individual cups and water source.
  • Students will not have access to microwaves during lunch.

 

Attendance

  • Now, more than ever before, we need clear communication regarding your student’s attendance. State guidelines require us to report students who are chronically absent/truant.
  • If your student is sick, please contact the school nurse at 540-422-7416 or csuhrie@fcps1.org so that she may track illness in the school community.
  • If your student is absent for any other reason, please email: AMSattendance@fcps1.org and include any teacher you feel is relevant. You may also leave a message at 540-422-7419, no later than 8:30 am. If we do not hear from you regarding your student, the absence will be marked as unexcused.

Cleaning Protocols

  • AMS’s Custodial crew will make ‘rounds’ every two hours as per Facilities protocols. During each round, custodians will Clean and Disinfect all high touch
  • End of Day cleaning is the last sweep though the building at the end of each day. Staff does the cleaning and disinfecting of all high touch surfaces as well as sweep floors, empty trash, collect recycling, process bathrooms, etc. like we have always done at the end of a school day. 
  • What does it mean to ‘Clean’ – Proper procedure listed by CDC, VDH, states that you clean surfaces first with soap (Envirox H2Orange, red dilution level) and water. What is ‘Disinfect’ – According to Webster’s, to disinfect kill germs and bacteria via chemical means. Typically, disinfectants kill more germs than sanitizers (Abel-cide).
  • Wednesday’s Additional Cleaning will include, but not limited to: hallway tile floors and gym wood floors will be scrubbed using battery powered walk-behind and ride-on floor scrubbers. The electrostatic fogger will be used (see below).
  • Staff will use the new Electrostatic Foggers (with Abel-cide) to disinfect surfaces in all rooms after being ‘cleaned.’ Surfaces include (but not limited to):
  • Student desks
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Carpeted floors (wall to wall)
  • Doors
  • Door knobs
  • Bathroom fixtures
  • Walls (floor to 6 foot height)
  • Large surface areas – café table
  • The products that we are using to Clean and Disinfect are products that we have been used safely for several years now throughout FCPS.
  • ‘High touch’ or ‘frequently touched’ surfaces include:
