Typical Preschool-Age Peers Program

Parent requests accepted through March 29, 2019

Typical peers serve as role models in a developmentally appropriate Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) preschool program at seven Fauquier County Public Schools elementary schools (Bradley, Brumfield, Coleman, Miller, Pearson, Pierce and Walter).  Each ECSE classroom can have up to four typical peers.

Each child to be considered for a typical peer position must pass a developmental screening that looks at all areas of development. Screenings will be administered by the ECSE teachers in the spring of 2019 for the classroom in which the child may be placed.  Children who pass the developmental screening may then be invited to a “play date” within the ECSE classroom. Typical peers must be at least three years six months by Sept. 30, 2019.

Parents of children who are screened as typical peers will be notified as to whether or not their child is selected to participate in the program for 2019-2020 by Friday, May 17, 2019. The Typical Peer Program will start Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

The cost for participation in the typical peer program is $1,500 per year with payments of $500 due on August 30, 2019, December 6, 2019, and March 6, 2020. FCPS is not responsible for transporting typical peers.  Registration at the school must be completed, and parents must provide proof of immunization, birth certificate and a current physical.

The ECSE classrooms follow the FCPS school calendar.  The Typical Peer Program is five days per week from 8:35 am – 1:15 pm.

Regular attendance is expected as it contributes to the overall role of the typical peer in the classroom and ensures that each typical peer benefits from the classroom experience. FCPS reserves the right to remove a typical peer from the classroom if he or she exhibits behaviors that are significant enough to interfere with the learning environment.

Requests for screening of typical preschool-age peers for the 2019-2020 school year should be submitted from January 22, 2019 through March 29, 2019. If interested, call the VPI/ECSE supervisor in the special education office of FCPS at (540) 422-7144. Parents employed by Fauquier County and/or Fauquier County Public Schools, but not living within Fauquier County, may apply for their children to attend an ECSE program as a Typical Peer.
