Denise Sandlin Named Assistant Superintendent for Business and Planning

Fauquier County Public Schools has named Mrs. Denise L. Sandlin as its new assistant superintendent for business and planning. Dr. David Jeck, division superintendent, announced her appointment during the Fauquier County School Board meeting on February 8. Effective February 15, Sandlin, 62, will fill the position vacated in December by Prashant Shrestha.

Dr. Jeck said of the newly named assistant superintendent, “Ms. Sandlin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Fauquier County Public Schools. Her background in school system budgeting is very impressive, and she carries with her an outstanding reputation. She’ll do a great job, and I am looking forward to her joining an already excellent team.”

Sandlin was excited to learn she had been selected for the position. “I felt that this was where I belonged. I wanted to become a part of the positive culture where contributions are appreciated,” she said. “This position was a career goal for me, and I feel this door was not opened up by accident.”

Ms. Sandlin will bring over twenty years of diversified business management experience to FCPS, including previous work in state and local governments and public schools.  Sandlin comes to Fauquier from Chesterfield County Public Schools, where she has served as the director of management and budget since 2019.  Previously, she worked for the County of Henrico as a budget supervisor and controller and Petersburg City Public Schools as the business and finance director.  

Sandlin looks forward to getting to know the staff and school community and is ready to put her skills to work to contribute to the school division's success. Having worked in several districts of varying sizes, she prefers a mid-size division, such as Fauquier, where she can get to know people and feel she is a part of the big picture rather than a number.

When asked what motivates her, Sandlin replied, "I have a very compassionate and caring heart, and I love to help people. I love to be part of something greater than myself. I love my profession, and I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can use my skills to accomplish success and help others to do the same."

As assistant superintendent for business and planning, Sandlin will assist the division superintendent with business and strategic planning, be responsible for the annual budget development process, and develop the school operating, business and support services budgets and capital improvement plan (CIP). Other responsibilities include supervising and coordinating the school division's fiscal services, budgeting, modernization, and new construction projects. 

In her first 90 days as assistant superintendent, Sandlin plans to finalize the FY 22 budget, familiarize herself with the FY 21 budget and determine the school division's year-end trajectory. She intends to visit each school and department to meet the staff, assess their needs, and offer assistance. She will also begin to develop a positive working relationship with her Fauquier County counterparts and review required VDOE reporting to ensure compliance.

Her long-range plan includes reviewing expenditures to identify savings that will not compromise the division's operations. She also aims to modernize school division processes to be more efficient and effective.

Sandlin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management and marketing from Central Washington State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Averett University.  She continued her education at Liberty University, where she earned her Master of Science degree in accountancy.  

Ms. Sandlin and her husband, Tom, have two adult children and two grandchildren, with one on the way. She enjoys being active in her church, spending time with friends and family, and traveling in her free time.
