Community Preschool Programs to Benefit from 5K Proceeds

Access to high-quality preschool education is becoming a reality for increasing numbers of Fauquier County children, thanks to the efforts of Fauquier County Public School’s expanding Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) and the efforts of the Fauquier Preschool Coalition.

In 2017, this public-private group known as the Fauquier Preschool Coalition applied for and received a $250,000 grant to explore ways to expand opportunities in Fauquier County to access high-quality preschool programs.

Dr. Eileen Burgwyn, the co-chair of Learning Starts Early along with Dr. Bob Dart, commented, “Coming together with other community agencies and preschool providers to form the Preschool Coalition has allowed us to increase outreach to families who may not be able to afford preschool for their children.  Working with the Books on the Bus (BOB) project has spread the message of the importance of early childhood literacy throughout Fauquier County.”

The biggest challenge to the Coalition is how to continue to support children and families once the grant expires.

Learning Starts Early (LSE), a fund of the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation and member of the Fauquier Preschool Coalition, sponsors an annual family event called the Gobble, Gobble, Run or Wobble 5k and Kids Run to meet the needs of children who may not have access to high-quality preschool programs. In previous years, funds generated by the race have been used to benefit FCPS VPI program, Head Start, and to provide scholarships for students, family resource programs, special enrichment programs for children, and professional development opportunities for preschool teachers.

The fourth annual race will be held in the town of Warrenton on Saturday, November 17, 2018.  A 10% student discount is available to students who register prior to November 10th and enter the code “Student 18” at checkout.
