Regional Science and Engineering Fair Junior Division Winners Announced
The Sixth Annual Fauquier Regional Science & Engineering Fair, junior division (6th-8th grades), was held at Fauquier High School on March 16. The fair hosted 27 of the top middle school competitors from Fauquier County schools including Auburn MS, Cedar Lee MS, Highland School, Marshall MS, Taylor MS, Wakefield School, and Warrenton MS. This year two new directors coordinated the fair - Regional Fair Director Erica Deane from Highland School and District Fair Director Kara Reffitt from Kettle Run High School.
The top 10 percent of projects at the junior division fair are eligible to register for the Broadcom Masters Competition, held each October in Washington, D.C. Qualifiers for Broadcom Masters included:
- Hunter Hearsey, Highland School 8th grader, $100 prize for “Water Power.”
- Linus Kontanis, Warrenton Middle School 7th grader, $100 prize for “Hydrochloric Acid vs. Antioxidation Coatings.”
- McCall Christman, Highland School 8th Grader, $100 prize for “Biomass Battles.”
In addition, a number of special awards were presented. The winners of those awards received certificates, cash prizes, medallions or other prizes from the sponsoring organizations. Thank you to Head Special Awards Judge Dorothy Tepper for organizing the awards.

Association for Women Geoscientists Award – Olivia Devening, Highland School 8th grader for “A Little Dirt Never Hurt!”
Lemelson Early Inventor Prize – Hunter Hearsey, Highland School 8th grader for “Water Power.”
US Air Force Award - Linus Kontanis, Warrenton Middle School 7th grader for “Hydrochloric Acid vs. Antioxidation Coatings.”
US Air Force Award - Hunter Hearsey, Highland School 8th grader for “Water Power.”
US Metric Association Award - Kate Hill, Taylor Middle School 7th grader for “What is the Effect of Animal Manure on Plant Height?”
Office of Naval Research Award - McCall Christman, Highland School 8th grader for “Biomass Battles.”
Office of Naval Research Award - Hunter Hearsey, Highland School 8th grader for “Water Power.”
Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Award - Gwen Dziemian, Cedar Lee Middle School 7th grader for “Health of an Ecosystem with Sterile vs. Non-Sterile Factors.”
Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Award - Olivia Devening, Highland School 8th grader for “A Little Dirt Never Hurt!”
Private donors and community businesses provided sponsorships starting at $150 per student. This year’s core sponsors provided cash prizes for junior division fair and supported the travel of students from the senior division fair (held March 2).
